Hi, It's Sheri from CruiseTipsTV with the scoop on Express or Self Debarkation. Let’s face it, debarkation isn’t anyone’s favorite part of their cruise. But for some passengers, express debarkation can be a less stressful way to get off the ship, and one step closer to home. So, what exactly is it? Express Debarkation or Self Debarkation allows passengers that are able to carry their own luggage off the ship to debark on their own, generally before everyone else. It’s not right for everyone, but according to most cruise directors we’ve spoken with lately, it’s all the rage, and on some voyages, well over half of passengers are opting to walk themselves (and their luggage!) off the ship. So, is it right for you? Well, maybe…let’s break it down a bit: If you chose to express debarkation, you don’t have to put your luggage outside your stateroom the night before. There are no zone tags to place on your bags, and there is usually a LOT less waiting around before you debark. You generally get to leave the ship before everyone else, which also means you may have to wake up quite early on debarkation day. Some people prefer to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and stretch out their time on board. Remember, You must be able to carry your own luggage all the way from your stateroom to the terminal, with no assistance. So, if you have a flight to catch, or packed light and have the ability to lug all of your bags, this could be a great way to get off the ship and on the road much faster! But, if the thought of schlepping all your bags at the crack of dawn is not appealing, hang out on board and wait for your zone to be called. After all, every minute on a cruise ship beats a minute at work!
