YouTube Video Description

This third, 20 minute installment in the Floating Paradise Lost ACHILLE LAURO video series covers one of the ship’s final cruises from Genoa in late September of 1994, just weeks before she caught fire and sank off Somalia. Most of the other ships encountered now no longer exist. The ACHILLE LAURO was a fascinating ocean liner with a rich history that has already been well documented in the first two parts of this tribute. Even at this late stage of her career, she had a great personality and was well loved by passengers and crew. This video begins with our arrival in Genoa and shows the boarding process, our modest cabin and the ship’s departure. Other ships encountered in Genoa include the Corsica ferry CORSICA REGINA and the Tirrenia ferries FLAMINIA, PETRARARCA and DELEDDA. Other cruise ships include the then year old COSTA ROMANTICA departing just before ACHILLE LAURO, the ITALIA PRIMA (ex STOCKHOLM, which was finishing her rebuild at the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard), the partially built Silversea Cruises luxury ship SILVER WIND and the AMERICAN ADVENTURE being restored to her previous livery as COSTA RIVIERA. On the second day, the ACHILLE LAURO arrived in Naples, where the following ships were encountered: the small coastal cruiser FALERNO, Royal Cruise LIne’s ROYAL ODYSSEY (ex ROYAL VIKING SEA), Tirrenia’s MANZONI and EMILIA and, again, the COSTA ROMANTICA. A shore excursion to Pompeii and an early evening departure wrap up the second day. On the third day, ACHILLE LAURO anchored at Syracuse and is captured in nice tender shots. On the fourth, sea day, more of the ACHILLE LAURO’s decks and interiors are captured, with much more to come… #classiccruiseships #starlauro #achillelauro #italiaprima #costaromantica #disasteratsea #msccrociere #royalodyssey #petrararca #silverwind #willemruys
