Built in 1862 and used until the early 1990's, historic Napier Prison in Napier, New Zealand is now a tourist attraction that offers self-guided audio tours (historical or ghost tours) and hosts an escape room. It's a great place to visit for those interested in history or those more interested in the ghost tour with many ghostly sightings having been reported. It is New Zealand's oldest prison complex. Today, visitor's can see the cells where prisoners were kept along with the conditions that changed over the life of the prison. There are different wings, a small cemetery area, the hanging yard, solitary confinement and shower blocks. Throughout the prison, stories of the prison's history, famous prisoners and conditions in the prison are told. It is an uphill walk from the art deco area of the city.
