Apart from summertime departures with an occasional musical group aboard, there is no scheduled entertainment. Yes the Arctic Circle crossing ceremony can be a rousing show for those chosen by King Neptune as victims and others watching but in Hurtigruten's own words, Mother Nature provides the entertainment, and interaction with fellow travelers and spectacular scenery are the main draws. Hurtigruten really maximise this connection to destinations you visit through an extensive program of tours, some geared to the seasons, include city walking tours, museum and church visits, birding, dog sledding, kayaking, Lapland (Sami) cultural tours, and half-day trips to the North Cape. None of the ships are the huge tower blocks mainstream lines rely on. They all look like ships and carry between 300-1000 passengers. They all have comfortable cabins ranging from insides through to expedition suites and all the ships feature an a la carte restaurant and at least one additional café. It’s also worth noting that all 11 coastal ships offer a full 3 course vegan menu. You find Jacuzzis on pretty much all of the ships and in fact on the Finnmarken you’ll even find a swimming pool on deck, although you’re a braver man than me if you decide to use it in some of climates you’re travelling to. You’ll normally find a ships library, a bar, fitness room on most of the ships. Children’s facilities are slightly limited on some of the older tonnage, however this is starting to change with the introduction of the Young Explorers Programme. The new programme tailor-made for younger guests, is on the Finnmarken year round and is available on the Trollfjord during school holidays. The programme is aimed at children aged 7 to 13 and is designed to entertain and inspire the next generation of explorers. The children can take part in daily activities, environmental actions and excursions such as beach clean-ups. All of the activities will are offered in English and Scandinavian languages and if there’s space then the parents can join in with their kids too. Hurtigruten also have some new ships on order. The first of which is the MS Roald Amundsen which is due for launch in July of 2018 and is going to be one of two new hybrid powered expedition ships. The new hybrid powered engines and advanced hull construction are said to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 percent but also allow for almost silent sailing, perfect for not scaring off local wildlife.
