YouTube Video Description

ONE DAY ashore in Florence from our P&O Azura Mediterranean cruise — and it completely took our breath away. From Medici family secrets and hidden bones beneath a palace to Galileo's tomb and the greatest gelato we've ever tasted, Florence delivered everything and more. Florence is reached via La Spezia cruise port — roughly a 2-hour coach journey from the ship. With limited time ashore, we made every single second count. First stop: the Palazzo Medici Riccardi — the original home of the most powerful banking family in Renaissance Florence. Inside you'll find the extraordinary 'Made in Florence' exhibition, room after room of ornate tapestries, painted ceilings, and — most unexpectedly — tunnels, wells and what appeared to be actual bones buried beneath the palace. The Medici family really did have some wild secrets. We grabbed gelato (hazelnut and chocolate — absolutely divine) before heading to the Basilica di Santa Croce, where Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci are actually buried. There's also a relic here believed to be a thorn from the Crown of Jesus Christ. Whether you're religious or not, the sheer scale of history in this place is staggering. We also caught a glimpse of the iconic Duomo — you simply cannot miss it — though the queues were hours long, so we admired it from outside. Still jaw-dropping. Back on board, we hit the buffet, enjoyed a few drinks at Brodies, and somehow didn't get back to our cabin until after midnight. Absolutely no regrets. 📍 Cruise Port: La Spezia, Italy (approx. 2-hr coach to Florence city centre) 📍 Palazzo Medici Riccardi — Via Cavour 3, Florence 📍 Basilica di Santa Croce — Piazza di Santa Croce, Florence 💬 Have you been to Florence?
