The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France in 1886, stands 305 feet tall and has welcomed millions of immigrants arriving by sea. Lady Liberty was designated a National Monument in 1924 and remains a symbol of freedom and hope—not just to Americans, but to people all over the world. ⛴️ Staten Island Ferry Facts: The Staten Island Ferry has been transporting passengers between Manhattan and Staten Island since 1817—that’s over 200 years of service! It carries about 70,000 passengers per day, offering not just practical transportation but one of the best free views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty. As we continue downriver, we pass beneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, completed in 1964 and named after Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European to enter New York Harbor in 1524. At the time it was built, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world—and it's still an awe-inspiring sight today.
