Katakolo is the closest to port in Greece to be able to visit Ancient Olympia which is still about an hour’s drive away. But it is probably the highlight of things to do from this port. Olympia is known as the birthplace of the Olympic Games that started as far back as 776 BC. For a port like this we tend to like to do things on our own rather than book through the cruise ship. We looked into getting to Olympia with either an independent tour guide for the day, or with a bus transfer that would take us to the archaeological site where we would purchase an entrance ticket and explore on our own and then provide us with a return transfer that matched with our all aboard time. Some of the sights we would see in Olympia would have been the Temple of Hera, the Olympic flame, and the Temple of Zeus. And we could actually see the stadium where the Olympic Games began where the early athletes and warriors once came to compete. There was also the option to do a more local Katakolo & Pyrgos Hop-on Hop-off Bus but we decided to take it easy for the day instead. We have been going non-stop for several days and we’re feeling a bit tired. After a bit of poking around the shops we made our way back to the ship. And along the way we had a nice cold beer from our local market and caught up on a video call with our family back home. Thanks for coming along on Hubbard’s Journey. It was a fairly quiet day exploring Katakolo Greece today, but regardless we hope you enjoying coming on our journey
