If you're in Cairns then have a look at the Kuranda Scenic Railway. This is often combined with the Skyrail to make a round trip between Cairns and Kuranda in the Atherton Tablelands and is a fabulous day out. We took the Skyrail up to Kuranda and spent a few hours in the beautiful township before heading back down to Cairns and the ship on the Scenic Railway. The journey between Cairns and Kuranda takes around 90 minutes and you can travel standard or Gold Class. Gold Class includes a drink and some nibbles in the superior carriages.
