With new deployment schedules and official announcements of cruise ships being scrapped, it was quite a busy week yet again. Carnival Cruise Line announced this past week that all cruises from North America were going to be cancelled through the end of September. This was not too surprising, as the previous week, CLIA cruise members jointly agreed to a voluntary suspension of cruising until at least September 15th. So, similar to Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival is deciding to cancel all cruises through the end of that month. Also this past week, Royal Caribbean Group confirmed that it too was further delaying its resumption of cruising. Although, the cruise line was sticking to the CLIA timeline, cancelling cruises through September 15th. There were a few exceptions, including cruises in New England/Canada and Bermuda being cancelled through the end of October. Sister brand Celebrity Cruises made a similar declaration, cancelling most cruises through September 15th, with a few exceptions of further cancellations. For both cruise lines, cruisers will receive a 125% future cruise credit for the amount paid for the cruise. Or, they can opt for a refund. Related to the cruise suspension, MSC Cruises also announced it was cancelling all North American cruises to the Caribbean through September 15th. This change affects two ships, MSC Seaside and MSC Armonia. In addition, the cruise line will be re-deploying two of its ships from Miami, FL to begin sailing from Port Canaveral. MSC Seaside will begin sailing from its new homeport this fall offering a variety of itineraries and visits to the brand new Ocean Cay Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. In other cruise ship news, we learned that the first of the six Carnival Corp. ships to be officially decommissioned is the Costa Victoria. Perhaps the most surprising news is that the ship is not being sold; rather, it is being scrapped. Also, news broke that the Spanish cruise line Pullmantur Cruises, which is 49% owned by Royal Caribbean, was in financial trouble and was filing to restructure. With this announcement, it was also revealed that two of its ships, Sovereign and Monarch (formerly Royal Caribbean ships) were being stripped, suggesting those ships too might be scrapped.
