Creator's Key Takeaways

Manzanillo has a dual identity. It is Mexico’s busiest commercial seaport and it is also a Tourist’s paradise.

One of the most memorable activities in Manzanillo that doesn't cost a dime is to visit the town's Historical Center.

I find it amusing that almost all of the ship excursions seem to include food and most of them have the same selection.

Creator's Tips & Advice

Budget a couple of hours for the DIY walking tour to allow for stops.
Look to the West at sunset for a chance to see the green flash phenomenon.

YouTube Video Description

Today we are discussing Manzanillo excursions Oct 2024. We are talking about our third Mexican port on our DIY World cruise. The NCL Encore docks in the Cruise ship port at 7 AM on October 21 and sails away at 4 PM. Manzanillo has a dual identity. It is Mexico’s busiest commercial seaport and it is also a Tourist’s paradise. There are a wide range of beaches and water activities, golf courses and a historical center. Many industries can be found in and around Manzanillo as well. Manzanillo is well known for deep-sea fishing and the green flash phenomenon during sunsets. At the north end of Manzanillo bay is Las Hadas, the most famous of the city's resorts, that was featured in the movie 10. Beach scenes were filmed on La Audencia Bay. Manzanillo is a popular cruise ship port of call. In 2010, a dock for cruise ships was developed. Many tourists go from their cruise ships on city tours. One can also go swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving in Santiago Bay. There are numerous shipwrecks to explore including a cargo ship that sank in a hurricane in 1959 and the SS Golden Gate which sank in 1862 in nearby Playa de Oro. The beach is named after the huge cargo of gold she was carrying. The closest beach to the ship is Playa San Pedrito, a short walk along the malecon. A bit further afield you can find Playa Audiencia which offers calm waters for safe swimming and Playa Miramar that’s great for surfers. Manzanillo is self declared as the Sailfish Capital of the World. Since 1957, it has hosted important national and international fishing competitions, such as the Dorsey Tournament. One of the most memorable activities in Manzanillo is a visit to the town’s historical center. We plan to walk and have outlined a DIY walking tour in the historical center. The tour is about a 40 minute walk plus any time you need for pictures, shopping or eating. Start from the cruise ship with a seaside view of Manzanillo. Next will be the 82 foot tall bronze statue of a sailfish. Then we go through the Centro Historico . Next we will pass through Zócalo, the area’s central plaza then the church called Señora Del Carmen. The church architecture, blends both classic and modern elements. Next will be walking towards the Iguana park. The next stop is the Mercado Municipal Market with shopping stalls on the bottom and restaurants on top. You can decide if you want to snack at the market or at one of the mini taco stands that should be on our walk. The market also makes a great stop to use the washroom. The final stop is the church of Señora de Guadalupe. From there we will wander our way back to the cruise ship. Ncl offers a total of 8 excursions Hacienda, Rum & Chocolate Local Fresh Fruits, Orchids & Folkore Magic Pueblos Nogueras & Comala with Lunch Manzanillo And Barra De Navidad Village Plantation Mangroves Tunnels & Birds Salt Flats & Countyside Cuyutlan Turtle Sanctuary Catamaran Snorkel Adventure Viator excursions there are 5 Half-day Manzanillo City Tours vi.me/Hxuym Water Fall Tour 5 Hours Rural Areas vi.me/g96Mv Horse Back Riding With Danitours Mountain Rural Areas And Sand Beach vi.me/1U6bk barra de navidad and plantations vi.me/PR6rZ bike tour with Danitours in Manzanillo bike rental all the hotels zone RuralArea vi.me/DinbS Surprisingly enough, even though Manzanillo is the Sailfish Capital of the World, Neither the ship, nor viator offer deep sea fishing excursions. The fishing happens at least 10 miles off shore so it takes quite a boat ride. If this is something you really want to do, I’m sure you can find a local expert to take you out. In a similar fashion, there are at least two scuba diving outfits that one can contact personally but there are no formal excursions to book. Another missing opportunity is golfing. Some of the golf courses have special characteristics such as having 27 holes and it’s considered to be one of the 100 best courses in the world. However you decide to spend your day in Manzanillo, get ready to watch for the green flash as the sun sets and we make our way to our final mexican destination of Acupulco.
