Miyazaki - Aoshima Island | Diamond Princess Excursion | Japan

This is the 9th and final video in our series about our cruise around Japan on the Diamond Princess! We booked an excursion for our port stop in Miyazaki because the cruise terminal was fairly industrial and far away from anything we could tour easily on our own. Our excursion took us along the coast to Aoshima, a small, tropical island famous for the Aoshima Shrine, a vermilion shrine dedicated to sea deities. On the way Aoshima island we observed the unique "Devil's Washboard" rock formations surrounding it. These are natural monuments. The shrine is known for its bright red buildings and blessings for romance and safe travel. The temple had a number our unique experiences where you can pay a little money to offer a prayer. Aoshima island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is known for its subtropical vegetation, beautiful beaches, surfing, and local food. It is a popular destination for both nature lovers and those seeking spiritual blessings like matchmaking.  After Aoshima, we continued along the coast to a roadside stop where we had lunch and enjoyed the view. We next headed to a shochu distillery. When we left Miyazaki we had no idea that this was to be our last port of our cruise. Port stops were scheduled for Kochi and Toba, but due to high winds and torrential storms, we could not dock. We stayed at sea for two days before disembarking in Yokohama.
