Cruise Tourism Boost for Kenya as MV Viking Sky Docks in Mombasa A magnificent welcome unfolded at the Port of Mombasa as the cruise ship MV Viking Sky docked at Berth One, bringing approximately 750 passengers and 450 crew members to Kenya’s coast. The vessel arrived at around 7:30am after sailing from the Seychelles, and passengers were greeted with vibrant performances from traditional dancers, showcasing the rich culture and hospitality of the Kenyan coast. Tourists were swiftly transferred in a fleet of tour vehicles to explore some of Kenya’s most iconic attractions — including world-famous game parks, pristine beaches, and cultural heritage sites — highlighting the country’s diverse tourism offering. Officials from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya Tourism Board, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) were present to receive the ship and its visitors. During the visit, KWS officially launched its new “Cruise-to-Park” initiative, offering tour operators a 30% incentive for bringing groups of 100 or more cruise tourists to Kenya’s national parks. The programme aims to strengthen cruise tourism and encourage more international visitors to experience Kenya’s wildlife. Speaking at the event, KWS Coast Senior Assistant Director Ms Elema Hapicha described the arrival of cruise ships such as Viking Sky as a strong signal of Kenya’s growing reputation as a premier Indian Ocean cruise destination.
