Princess cruises kicked things off first, beating their sister line to the punch. Princess announced the cancellation of their Australian and New Zealand departures up to December 19th this year. With the cancellation, they have provided their affected guests with three options. The first option involves swapping cancelled cruises for an alternative voyage that has been selected by Princess. 2021 fares are protected on the replacement cruise and guests will receive the same category stateroom or higher. This system is being operated in a first in, first served basis. The second option allows guests to receive a future cruise credit for all money paid towards the cruise fare, with a 10% non-refundable bonus. The FCC can be used on any cruise booked by and sailing before December 31st 2022. Finally, Princess is also allowing guests to receive a full refund. And coming in like a second punch to the gut, P&O Australia announced the cancellation of their cruises up until December 17th this year. Unlike Princess, P&O’s offering depends on the guests reservation and those affected will receive communications detailing their options which include a future cruise credit, refund and alternative voyages. If guests have received a future cruise credit from a past cancellation, they are ineligible to receive another. In addition, P&O have cancelled two cruises, Pacific Adventure’s Fiji cruise originally scheduled to depart on February 13th 2022, and Pacific Encounter’s New Guinea Island cruise originally scheduled to depart on February 9th 2022. These cruises were cancelled according to P&O, because they were unable to organise an alternative domestic voyage. P&O have also announced that International voyages scheduled between January and March 2022, have been converted into domestic itineraries. Carnival made a similar announcement this week, swapping a large number of international itineraries scheduled between January and April 2022 into domestic voyages. Guests affected by announced changes will receive communications directly from the cruise line outlining their options. There has also been a change to the Princess Captain’s Circle Loyalty program. Platinum and Elite members will now receive a 50% discount off an unlimited medallion net wifi package onboard, in place of the old system of free internet minutes. In addition, both levels will also gain access to early reservations for Dine My Way, Princess’ new dining reservation system, with bookings able to be made even before final payment. It remains to be seen if Royal Caribbean make a similar announcement about their upcoming Australia summer season. It seems likely that they will join their competitors with a cancellation of some or all of their voyages scheduled for the 2021/2022 summer.
