Creator's Key Takeaways

now I've been on a lot of cruise ships and accessing the internet at sea is usually an exercise in frustration

it turns out that it's true but it's not really true

at home it would take me about 2 to 3 seconds to get the whole page to load on this same computer using a cable modem but it's gonna take a lot longer at sea

don't expect that when you're at sea but in certain ports on the Norwegian getaway that's the kind of internet performance you can get

Creator's Tips & Advice

βœ“Expect slow internet speeds when at sea on cruise ships
βœ“In ports with MTN communications equipment, internet speeds can be very fast

About our Bacon Score methodology
YouTube Video Description↓

The Norwegian Getaway uses MTN Communication's new hybrid network technology to drastically improve Internet access speeds when the ship visits certain ports. At sea, the connection still sucks just as bad as on any cruise ship, as you'll see in this demo... but when the ship visits a port that is equipped with MTN's terrestrial broadband equipment, Internet speeds can be blazing fast, as you'll also see in the demo! To learn more about the technology MTN Communications has pioneered to dramatically improve the shipboard Internet experience... watch their video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYJx7WHbXto Full disclosure: While the demo you see here is real and you really can (sometimes) get an incredibly speedy Internet connection when the ship is in or near certain ports equipped with the right equipment... the high speed demo you see here is pretty much a best-case scenario. It took me many attempts to get such a good connection in Nassau. The service was quite flaky... sometimes it was blazing fast, sometimes not... and I'm talking about when we were docked. At sea, it was never any faster than what I had seen on other cruise ships. I think it's great that they've done something to improve the Internet service onboard cruise ships. The problem is, when the ship is in port and the connection is at its best, most passengers tend to be onshore and doing something other than accessing the Internet. At sea, when passengers really want a strong Internet connection... this doesn't seem any better than what I've seen on other cruise ships.
