See this City recorded from the bow of the NCL Norwegian Jewel Cruise Ship on an early morning Panama Canal Transit. You can see the morning fog still hanging there at the beginning of this video. Panama City (in Spanish: Ciudad de PanamÑ), the capital of Panama, is a modern city framed by the Pacific Ocean and man-made Panama Canal. The city was founded on August 15, 1519, by Pedro Arias de Ávila, also known as Pedrarias DÑvila. Within a few years of its founding, the city became a launching point for the exploration and conquest of Peru and a transit point for gold and silver headed back to Spain through the Isthmus. In 1671 Henry Morgan with a band of 1400 men attacked and looted the city, which was subsequently destroyed by fire. The ruins of the old city still remain and are a popular tourist attraction known as PanamÑ la Vieja (Old Panama). It was rebuilt in 1673 in a new location approximately 5 miles (8 km) southwest of the original city. This location is now known as the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) of the city. Casco Viejo, its cobblestoned historic center, is famed for colonial-era landmarks like the neoclassical Palacio Presidencial and bougainvillea-filled plazas lined with cafes and bars. The Miraflores Locks offers views of ships traversing the canal, an essential shipping route linking the Atlantic and Pacific. This museum [at 01:19 in this video] is located on the Amador Causeway in Panama City, Panama. It was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. This is Gehry's first design for Latin America. The design was conceived in 1999 and the museum opened in October 2014. In 2004 it was announced that Gehry, whose wife is Panamanian, would donate his design to the people of Panama.
