YouTube Video Description

Welcome to Ponta Delgada, WOW, what a beautiful port area. We arrived on the Carnival Freedom Transatlantic Cruise and are exploring the cruise area on foot. We were in Ponta Delgada previously and we did an excursion to the twin crater lakes, a pineapple plantation, and Jardim Botanical Garden. All of which were impressive and would recommend. However, we already saw them and wanted to save our money for local food and drinks this time and get our steps in. We walked to the Azores Military Fort and Museum (Forte de Sao Bras). It is a cool structure with awesome views of the cruise ship and the harbor. It has tons of historical artifacts & information on the Azores military and their involvement around the globe. It cost 3 Euro. They do not accept credit cards or US currency. After touring the museum, we walked 1.2 miles to Gruta do Carvão – lava tubes and caves. We got there around 12:25 and they close at 2:30 for lunch and open back up at 2:00pm. All the tours were full for the day. If you are interested in doing a tour book your spot well in advance. The tours are a maximum of 15 people and cost 6 Euro per person. They accept credit cards. We left the lava tubes and headed to the historic churches Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, Igreja de São José, and Santuário do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. We went to Portas da Cidade area to find something to eat. While walking we ran into our friends. They joined us on our quest to find a beer and local food. Most of the restaurants close between 12:30 & 2:30. However some will still be open for drinks only, working with a minimal staff. We planted ourselves at the Cervejaria Restaurant. Our server Igor came to the table with the handwritten menu on an eraser board. We ordered a local draft beer, local cheeses with bread and a local dish of sardines. The sardines are not what you get in a can, LOL. We had a wonderful time laughing and joking. Relative to the restaurant the food was very salty. The service was slow, but that’s according to our American standards. The location was amazing, and the outdoor street seating was impressive. On our stroll back to the ship we stopped for a Brazilian drink called Caipirinha at the Doris Bar. What a great drink! They do a wonderful job at this bar however, it is pricey. The bar is right near the entrance to get back on the ship. Come along on our 10,000 steps a day challenge. If you are up for the challenge, please post in the comments your steps for each day. We love cruising and feel truly fortunate and grateful we have the ability and opportunity to cruise the world by Land & Sea. On this ship we are at sea for 8 days and various ports for 5 days. Thanks for coming along on our Journey. Happy Cruising & Traveling the World!
