We arrived in San Diego, California on the Royal Princess cruise ship, and one of our first stops was the famous Unconditional Surrender statue—also known as The Kissing Statue. This larger-than-life sculpture near the USS Midway Museum depicts the iconic moment a sailor kissed a nurse in Times Square on V-J Day, celebrating the end of World War II. Created by artist Seward Johnson, the statue symbolizes peace, joy, and the relief felt across the world in 1945. It’s become one of the most visited—and most photographed—spots in San Diego. Of course, we couldn’t resist recreating the kiss ourselves! It’s a popular tradition, and we had a blast giving it a go right by the San Diego waterfront. In this video, we share the history behind the statue, the story of the original photo, and what makes this statue such a special part of visiting downtown San Diego.
