The Greek Island of Rhodes is famous for its ancient history, its incredibly preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site medieval town and being home to The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. We start with an amazing viewpoint, then visit the Acropolis of Rhodes with a theatre, stadium, gymnasium ruins and a library. We then travel through the strong outer fortifications to the medieval town with its Palace of the Grand Master and Street of Knights, created by the Knights of St John. It is so well preserved, you expect knights to come in a out of the houses where they lived. We visit in side the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of St John, also called the Knights of Rhodes, who had their headquarters on the island from 1310 to 1522. The Knights of St John originally began as an order to build hospitals for Christian pilgrims but became more a military orgaization on Rhodes to fight off invaders. At the end of the video, we discuss the Colossus of Rhodes. Tradition thinking had the Colossus straddling Mondraki Harbour. Archeologists today believe the tallest statue in the ancient world actually stood beside the harbour with both legs together, holding a torch, much like the current-day Statue of Liberty.
