In December 2022, Steve and I went on an Antarctica cruise onboard Le Boréal of PONANT. In this episode 6 of the Antarctica video series, we will cover day 8 of the cruise, when it was Christmas Eve, and we spent the last day in Antarctica on two South Shetland Islands, Deception Island and Half Moon Island. Deception Island is probably the most fascinating island in the South Shetlands with the most haunted past. Once known as a haven for sealers and whalers, this island has seen so much bloodshed that had driven some species of seals and whales almost to extinction. When visiting the island, you would be greeted with a morbid reminder of this. On a more upbeat note, when we finished our landing at Deception Island, we also found an unexpected guest had joined us on Le Boréal too - Santa Claus. In the afternoon, we made the final landing of the trip - Half Moon Island. Afterwards, the day didn't end. Instead there were many activities - caviar tasting, Christmas Eve Gala Dinner, and evening show.
