http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Passengers (or "guests" as we were referred to) on the Sea Spirit were very excited about the first shore landing on Ny London. Remains of a mining facility established in 1911 by the Northern Exploration Company, an English company, can be seen along the shore which included a dilapidated hut and machinery (which included pieces of a locomotive) from Svalbard's early industrial boom. Other tried to extract marble at at the start of the 20th Century, but the marble turned out to be useless because blocks crumbled from the permafrost. Guests were divided into small walking groups and accompanied by rifle-toting guides for a two-hour walk along the tundra. Highlights were a few reindeer, purple saxifrage - the first plant to bloom in Arctic spring, and a Rock Ptarmigan. Hey, you take what you can get. The cultural sights were "interesting" - perhaps the best was yet to come.
