Holland America Line, often shortened to HAL, is an American owned cruise line with a long Dutch heritage, operated by the cruising giants of the Carnival Corporation and that offers premium cruise holidays in popular destinations such as the Mediterranean, the Canaries, the Caribbean and the Norwegian Fjords. The line was established way back in 1873 as the as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Dutch-American Steamship Company), which was shortened to the Holland-Amerika Lijn. Originally the line was a passenger and freight shipping line based out of the city of Rotterdam in The Netherlands, that carried passengers and freight between The Netherlands and North America. Nowadays, the line run several ships from homeports such as Vancouver, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle as well as their traditional homes of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
