It's just stunning. I mean, how many times can we say this place is stunning.

Creator's Tips & Advice

Bring really good walking shoes and good thick socks to avoid blisters.
If you don't want to do a formal excursion, you can easily walk to the waterfalls yourself.
Be careful when walking on the road as there isn't always a dedicated walking path and cars/trucks drive there.

🇳🇴 SKJOLDEN, NORWAY | WHY WE CAME BACK 5 TIMES! Of all the incredible places we visited while cruising Norway, tiny Skjolden became one of our absolute favorites. How much did we like it? Our cruise itinerary brought us to Skjolden FIVE different times—and we got off the ship and explored again and again! In this video, we're combining adventures from two of those visits to show you why this beautiful little village at the end of Lustrafjord kept drawing us back. 🥾 WATERFALLS & NORWEGIAN COUNTRYSIDE On one visit, we set out on foot from the cruise port with no big excursion planned. After leaving the ship, we followed the road into the beautiful countryside outside Skjolden. What started as a walk turned into a roughly 5–6 mile adventure. Along the way, we came across two impressive waterfalls. The second—and much larger—was Åsafossen, which plunges dramatically down the mountainside near Vassbakken Camping. But the waterfalls weren't the only highlight. We also wandered along trails through the surrounding fields, took in the incredible mountain scenery and eventually made our way back toward Skjolden to spend some time exploring the village. ⛰️ HIKING ABOVE SKJOLDEN On another visit, we decided to see Skjolden from a completely different perspective. This time we headed UP! We followed the road climbing above the village and stopped at a viewpoint overlooking Skjolden. But while exploring, we spotted a trail disappearing into the woods. Of course, we had to see where it went! We followed the trail through the forest until we reached another beautiful viewpoint high above Skjolden, with incredible views of the village, fjord, lake and surrounding mountains. It turned into another fantastic day of exploring—and another reason Skjolden became one of our favorite Norwegian cruise ports. 📍 IN THIS VIDEO: • Skjolden, Norway • Lustrafjord • Two beautiful waterfalls, including Åsafossen • Vassbakken area • Norwegian countryside • Walking trails through the fields • Skjolden village • Hiking above Skjolden • Sengjaberget area/viewpoint • Eidsvatnet • Incredible fjord and mountain views • Exploring without a cruise excursion 🚢 FIVE VISITS TO SKJOLDEN One of the unusual things about our extended time aboard Sky Princess was having the opportunity to return to some Norwegian ports multiple times. We visited Skjolden FIVE times. Instead of seeing the port once and moving on, we had the chance to keep exploring—and Skjolden never disappointed us. It's a tiny village surrounded by enormous mountains, waterfalls, green countryside and some of the most beautiful fjord scenery we've experienced. For cruisers who enjoy walking and hiking, Skjolden is also a great place to simply get off the ship and start exploring. No elaborate plans required. We're Ed & Mai: WanderFree Retirees. We retired early, sold our home and most of our possessions, and set out to travel the world while we're still young enough to enjoy the adventure. Our journey has taken us through Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and now Europe as we experience what long-term travel and early retirement really look like. If you're planning a Norwegian Fjords cruise—or your ship is stopping in Skjolden—we hope our adventures give you some ideas for exploring this incredible place. 👍 If you enjoyed exploring Skjolden with us, please give the video a thumbs up. 💬 Have you been to Skjolden? If you had ONE day here, would you hike to the waterfalls, climb to the viewpoints, explore the village—or take an excursion farther into the Norwegian countryside?
