This is better than some of the places you do an Airbnb.

Oh, it's a very large cone, Robert. I'd say you wouldn't mind a 6-in gun, would you?

She's lovely.

Welcome to our Spike Island Vlog! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช In this video we're exploring Ireland's Alcatraz prison, the amazing visitor attraction on an island in Cork Harbour. If you're planning a trip to Cobh or Cork, this historical site is a must-see! We were really excited about visiting Spike Island after hearing lots of great things about its fascinating history and we weren't disappointed. The island has served as a prison, fortress and convict depot. At one stage, it was the biggest prison in the British Empire. Its strategic location within one of the world's biggest natural harbours meant that Cobh and Spike Island played a significant part in the transatlantic transport of indentured people. You get to Spike Island via a scenic ferry ride from Cobh. The island's history as a formidable prison has earned it the nickname Ireland's Alcatraz, a feeling you get even on the ferry crossing. The visitor experience guides you through centuries of history, from the building of the original star-shaped fortress to its use as a convict depot, its time as a treaty port held by the British Army after Irish independence, its transfer to the Irish state and finally as a modern prison before its eventual closure. Today, Fortress Spike Island is purely a visitor centre and museum. We explored the former young offenders wing, saw the coastal defence guns, the bastion defences, the independence museum and the chilling punishment block. For those seeking thrills, Spike Island After Dark tours are also popular, delving into tales of murder, ghosts and hauntings within the abandoned prison blocks. We really enjoyed our visit to Spike Island and learning the fascinating history of the fortress and its surroundings. It's a great experience and a really interesting visitor centre. We hope this vlog helps you plan your own trip! 00:00 Welcome to Spike Island 00:24 Young Offenders Wing 01:32 Coastal Defence Guns 02:02 Bastion Defences 02:17 Independence Museum 03:54 Punishment Block 05:15 Cemetery #cobh #ireland #spikeisland #travelvlog #cork _________________________ We're Kolyn & Denis and we're The Curious Tourists! ๐ŸŒ We're showing you how to see the world without quitting your job.
