About our Bacon Score methodology
YouTube Video Description

Today on our Celebrity Millennium cruise, we arrive in Sri Lanka and step ashore at the Port of Hambantota… and honestly, this one caught us completely off guard. We take the free courtesy shuttle bus from the cruise terminal to the port gates, expecting to find cafés, shops, beaches, culture… something. Instead, we find wide roads, empty spaces, and very little for independent cruise passengers to actually do. This is Sri Lanka cruising reality that nobody really warns you about. We enjoy a leisurely walk (as we do on most ports), soaking up the heat, the atmosphere, and the scenery — but Hambantota turns out to be one of those ports where not booking an excursion can seriously limit your day. There’s no town centre close by, no beach clubs within walking distance, and no tourist infrastructure unless you’ve planned ahead. Don’t get us wrong — Sri Lanka is a fascinating country with incredible history, wildlife, temples, tea plantations, and warm, welcoming people. But Hambantota Port itself feels very much like a working port rather than a visitor-friendly destination. So this vlog is a friendly but honest warning for fellow cruisers: 👉 If you’re stopping at Hambantota — book a trip. 👉 Don’t expect a stroll-and-explore port. 👉 This is not a “wander off the ship” kind of place. We always like to show the real cruise experience, good and bad, especially for senior cruisers like us who enjoy walking, sightseeing, and people-watching rather than lying on a sunbed all day. If you’re planning a Celebrity cruise to Sri Lanka, this video could save you a wasted port day. 💬 Have you visited Hambantota on a cruise? 👍 Would you book an excursion here or stay onboard?
