DID YOU KNOW? The pyramids we all know and love are not THE pyramids at all. There’s an older pyramid, on the other side of Cairo, with stepped edges and plenty of surrounding tombs, adorned with hieroglyphics. The Saqqara Pyramid, also known as the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was built in the 27th century BCE during Egypt’s Third Dynasty. Designed by Imhotep, it’s recognised as the world’s earliest colossal stone structure and marks a groundbreaking achievement in ancient architecture. In other words, a bigger deal than the famous ones. 📍 HOW TO SEE IT I travelled as a guest of Viking Cruises [Ad] as part of their 12 day Pharaohs and Pyramids itinerary. That included a guided tour of the pyramid and some of the tombs. You can visit independently, although I’d highly recommend travelling with a guide for context and curiosities you'd otherwise miss.
