Creator's Key Takeaways

The open sandwiches and cakes are so quietly, ruinously good that light lunch becomes more of an aspiration than a promise.

The predominantly Japanese guests on board bring an elegance and frankly a ferocious enthusiasm for ballroom dancing that I've simply never witnessed anywhere else.

You do very little, very slowly, in the middle of an enormous quantity of water, and somehow it's the finest thing you've ever done.

Fuji, it turns out, is an elusive diva.

Creator's Tips & Advice

Take the scenic bus J20 in Aomori to reach the Big Buddha as it is easier than deciphering local transport.

About our Bacon Score methodology
YouTube Video Description

Part two of our Cunard Japan cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth — seven more ports, one very elusive volcano, and a Squid Game with macabre consequences (for the squid). The second leg of our voyage takes us from Yokohama's Chinatown (all 600-odd restaurants of it) up to the northern reaches of Honshu and Hokkaido, back down through the Sea of Japan, across to South Korea, and finally to Shimizu for one last, deeply optimistic attempt to see Mount Fuji. We climbed inside a 220-tonne bronze Buddha in Aomori, fished our own lunch out of a tank in Hakodate, paid our respects to Japan's most famous manga ghosts in Sakaiminato, wandered Busan's mighty Jagalchi Fish Market, and — spoiler — did not see Fuji, though not for want of trying. Along the way there was champagne afternoon tea, a steakhouse having an identity crisis, a mystery vending machine lurking in the weeds, and a cheese trolley that Helen treated with a devotion normally reserved for royalty. If you like your travel destination-first, your facts accurate, and your cruise ships suitably grand, you're in the right place. ⚓ Sailing: Queen Elizabeth | Cunard Japan & South Korea ⏱ Chapters 00:00 Welcome aboard Part Two 01:05 Sea Day 04:30 Yokohama: Chinatown, Yamashita Park & the Hikawa Maru 07:44 At Sea: Steakhouse at The Verandah 09:23 Aomori: Seiryū-ji & the Great Buddha of Shōwa 15:45 Hakodate, Hokkaido: The Morning Market & fishing for squid 17:45 Ōnuma Quasi-National Park & Mount Komagatake (in theory) 21:14 At Sea: Champagne Afternoon Tea at La Veranda 23:10 Sakaiminato: Mizuki Shigeru Road 26:59 Busan, South Korea 31:22 Shimizu: Kunozan Toshogu, Nihondaira & the hunt for Mount Fuji 📺 Missed Part One?
