It was built for the purpose of protecting the city of San Juan from attack by land from the east. It is a fortification with three levels and an extensive series of outer defenses. It took over 150 years to complete. Entry Information: This site is cashless. You must pay with a credit card or with Apple Pay. (Their gift shop did accept cash when I was there in September 2024.)
