--~-- Tropical Storm Elsa Update. A weakening Hurricane Elsa, now Tropical Storm Elsa, is moving through the Caribbean expected to be near Haiti today. Projections still have it near Key West by Tuesday as a tropical storm and then threatening to make landfall near Tampa. The National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. advisory puts the Category 1 storm with 70 mph winds, 999mb, about 30 miles east-southeast of Isla Beata, Dominican Republic moving west-northwest at 29 mph. On Friday it had grown in strength with winds up to 85 mph, dying down to 80 mph by Friday night. The storm is projected to slow down its forward speed today over western Haiti, then shift more northwest tomorrow or Monday. Elsa will move near the southern coast of Hispaniola today then make a move near Jamaica and portions of eastern Cuba on tomorrow. The National Hurricane Center expects the hurricane to move across central and western Cuba, toward the Florida Straits by Monday. Forecasters say Elsa may weaken slightly while over or near Cuba.
