We visited the Black Forest while we were cruising down the Rhine River on a Viking Riverboat on our way to Basel, Switzerland. This stop was part of the free excursion offered by Viking at each port, but it was really more of a shopping event for some versus a visit into the Black Forest. Unfortunately, we had a rather wet and soggy visit to the Hofgut Sternen Black Forest Village, but we made the best of it by turning our visit into a beautiful albeit wet hike along the beautiful Ravenna River. The hike consumed almost all of our time at this stop which had shops full of cuckoo clocks, with a demonstration of how they were made, and also glassware. There was also a bakery where they made the famous Black Forest cake, but by the time we got back they had all been consumed or purchased. Itβs always tough to be an international tourist and go shopping knowing that you have to carry it for the rest of the trip and then all the way home. We will probably visit the Black Forest again on a land trip and spend some time in the villages, but for now our hike along the Ravenna River must do.
