We arrived in Athens early in the morning and had to plan to get off of the cruise ship and take the hop on hop off bus to the Acropolis. Due to the fact that we had previously visited Greece, we felt pretty confident in this plan. Unfortunately, the heat, the crowds and the uncertainty of arrival and departure to the historical sites made this a bad choice. I have seen many people who did book short excursions have comments about how they felt they could probably have done their own tour on their own time. While I think this could work, I don’t think you should try this option if you are visiting in any of the summer months. temperatures get very high and due to limited access to water and shade at the acropolis, this could be a major challenge.
