Creator's Key Takeaways
This is the second time we visited. The first time we did pretty much a 9-hour Golden Circle tour. It was absolutely fantastic.
The city is definitely very walkable.
The church is actually really, really spectacular. It is absolutely huge when you get up close and it does feel very modern but in a good way that is just iconic already to Iceland.
We'd recommend that you take a look at the hop on off bus and work out how busy it is in that day in Rekuig. It might not be the best option for you.

On Day 8 of our Iceland and Greenland cruise on Island Princess we visited the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik. This was our second time visiting. During our first visit on Enchanted Princess, we experienced a 10-hour Golden Circle Tour so this time we decided to explore the city of Reykjavik. The city is one of the smallest capitals in the world and is very easy to explore on foot. We visited several tourist attractions such as the Rainbow Street, the Hallgrímskirkja Church and Old Parliament building. We explored Reykjavik independently. Support by RFM - NCM: https://bit.ly/3p9ObJO Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital, offers cruise passengers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and modern charm. Located on the southwest coast of Iceland, this compact and colorful city is home to around 140,000 people—over one-third of the country’s population. Despite its small size, Reykjavík boasts a rich cultural heritage and an energetic urban vibe surrounded by dramatic landscapes. The city’s history dates back to 874 AD, when Norse settler Ingólfur Arnarson is believed to have established the first permanent settlement in Iceland. The name Reykjavík, meaning “Smoky Bay,” was inspired by the steam rising from nearby geothermal hot springs, a feature that still defines the area today. These geothermal resources not only provide clean energy but also heat the city’s homes, swimming pools, and greenhouses. Cruise visitors will find plenty to explore. The striking Hallgrímskirkja Church, Reykjavík’s tallest building, offers panoramic views from its tower. Nearby, the Harpa Concert Hall, with its stunning glass façade, hosts musical performances and art exhibits. A stroll along the Old Harbor reveals cozy cafes, whale-watching tours, and museums such as the Reykjavík Maritime Museum and the quirky Icelandic Phallological Museum. For those eager to experience Iceland’s famous nature, the Golden Circle day tour—featuring Þingvellir National Park, the erupting Geysir geothermal area, and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall—is easily accessible from the city. Alternatively, soak in the soothing waters of the Sky Lagoon or the nearby Blue Lagoon for a quintessential Icelandic spa experience. Whether you’re here for a few hours or a full day, Reykjavík offers an unforgettable introduction to Iceland’s blend of Nordic culture, stunning nature, and welcoming spirit. We are Tom and Dom and we experienced our first cruise on the MSC Virtuosa during her UK staycation cruises in 2021. We are relatively new to cruising, however we can now say we are officially hooked. Our mission is provide a fair and balanced review of our travels. We look at the types of food that is available onboard, from main dining rooms, room service, buffets and pool side snacks. We include menus for each of cruises so that we can share the selection of drinks and meals that are available. Entertainment onboard a cruise ship is important to us and we enjoy theatre production shows, live music, quizzes and game shows. We love to explore different ports and destinations and enjoy sharing tips and tricks so that you can make the most of each port. We often explore ports independently but also book excursions that are interesting to us.
