Newport Rhode Island Cruise Port has a cruise season from May to November with the fall being the busiest months. The adventure in Newport starts as soon as you are ready to disembark the ship as this is a tender port. The larger shops are too big and cant dock so they anchor off the east passage of Narragansett Bay. Then you take a tender to Newport Harbour and you get off right at Perotti Park which is in the center of town. This tender ride is like a little excursion on its own. You can watch some sail boats and enjoy the views. It is about a 20 min tender ride, they can't go that fast as you are passing yachts and sailboats. Our New England and Canada cruise was the first time in a long time we got to Tender. The last time had been about 10 years ago. It adds to the uniqueness of this cruise itinerary. In terms of Newport Rhode Island cruise port atmosphere there is no big cruise terminal building as you tender in. There is a building with a visitor center and a washroom right at the dock. There is a nice green space a the park with some vendors and musicians. What is great about cruising to Rhode island is that when you get off the tender you are right in the downtown to explore. There is the 3.5 mile cliff walk where you can see the Breakers mansions. Fort Adams is also a popular location to visit. Next time I want to try the sail boats or go to the mansion.
