Seeing the Northern Lights (otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis) is a bucket list thing to do for many travelers and I was no different. Norway is a popular country to witness this natural light show phenomenon and, although Tromso is a common popular destination to see the lights, the little known city of Alta is fast becoming known as a more reliable spot (thanks to its geographic location) to see the lights. Alta is an amazing place and this video shows why you must go here (instead of anywhere else) to see the Northern Lights. Of course there's so much more to experience here than just the lights and this video shows it all. You can go snow showing, ice-fishing, husky dog sledding, visit the Sorrisniva igloo hotel (the world's most northern igloo hotel) and drink a blue ice cocktail at its icy bar. You can eat delicious food, meet the indigenous reindeer-herder Sami people and even be drawn in a sledge by their reindeer. And Alta itself has the most amazing striking Northern Lights Cathedral. This region of northern Norway offers the most fantastic wilderness adventures. My hotel was the Scandic Hotel which overlooks the cathedral and is very central and is opposite the public swimming pool. The hotel has two tickets to give out to guests to use that public swimming pool for free, so be sure to ask for those before anyone else!
