Instead of heading inland, we took the free shuttle to Paracas and booked a Ballestas Islands boat tour, a protected ecosystem filled with extraordinary bird and marine life. During our two-hour journey, we watched Humboldt penguins, sea lions, seals, and thousands of seabirds nesting on towering rock formations. We also got up close and personal with the Candelabro of Paracas — also known as the Candelabra of the Andes — a prehistoric geoglyph carved into the coastal hillside and best viewed from the water. It was one of the most surprising and fascinating moments of the day.
