Creator's Key Takeaways

I've heard several stories now of people being contacted after they get off a princess Cru and being told that they still owe money on that cruise

the fact that they're getting personal information is most concerning to me

the first line of defense is to be very suspicious anytime you are contacted and you do not initiate the contact

I really encourage you to consider changing your password for your account with Princess especially if you have reused that login

Creator's Tips & Advice

Be suspicious of any unexpected contact requesting payment or data
Do not use websites or phone numbers provided by the contact; go directly to the official company site
Change your Princess account password, especially if reused elsewhere
Use complex passwords not based on personal information
Consider using a password keeper or a physical notebook to manage passwords

YouTube Video Description

Hello Travelers, I wanted to take a minute to give everyone a heads up about a scam that is going on. People are reporting that they have been contacted by people saying their are from Princess, and they have the booking number from the cruise they just recently finished to prove it. The contacts have been via telephone (@DonsFamilyVacations) and via a letter mailed to their home (@LetsGoTravelTips!), and I believe others have been texted as well. The scammers are saying that you have a balance owed from the cruise you recently completed, and they want to collect. They have the booking number, and clearly your name and other data that indicates Princess likely has an ongoing data breach. While Carnival (who owns Princess) had a data breach in 2020, and Princess had one in 2019, the fact that the criminals have the booking numbers for current cruises points to a more recent (and potentially still ongoing) breach. It may be that Princess hasn’t announced it yet, or even that they don’t know it is happening, but the fact that they have this information is concerning. So I give some advice on how to combat this kind of an attack—it is called social engineering, and these people can be very convincing. They will frequently try to instill a sense of urgency on your part so that you act without thinking it through as well. They will be asking for payments methods—which could be credit cards, wire transfers, or in some cases, they will ask you to purchase a specific kind of gift card and read them back the numbers. Do not fall for this! View with extreme suspicion anyone who contacts you unsolicited and asks for payment information. Contact the company they say they are representing directly (do not use any website links or phone number they have provided—those will be under the direct control of the scammers). Instead, go to the company’s webpage and contact their fraud department to verify this is legitimate, and potentially to put an alert on your account with them that this has been attempted.
