Hello Travelers, I am taking The Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax prior to boarding a fantastic new cruise. Today I boarded The Ocean from Montreal’s Central Station. I booked a sleeper car, which included access to the business lounge before the train boarding. This was a nice perk, as the lounge had some drinks and coffee available. It was very popular, and there were times when it was so crowded, people couldn’t find seats. The Ocean had a podium just to the right of the business lounge, and the staff would open a set time before the train was scheduled to depart to allow passengers to get their dining reservations. Note, you need to drop any full sized suit cases off (check the Via Rail site for luggage restrictions) ahead of time, and you will not have access to them until you get back off the train at your destination. So in my carryon luggage, I had to make sure to pack any essentials for the night, plus clothes for the next day. The staff at the Ocean podium also gave me my sleeper bracelet, which I believe also got me dining access. This is a train with a lot of stops, and not everyone is overnighting on the train. Once they called the train, I joined the line. Down the escalator, there was someone to guide passengers. She directed me to the sleeper cars, and there I found my cabin. The cabin tour is in a separate video. Dinner was tasty and they offered some alcoholic beverages as well. After dinner, there was a scheduled talk about the train, which was interesting. When I got back from that talk, the attendant had made up my room for bed. The bottom bunk was made, but the linens were tucked into the frame between the mattress and the wall. They would not move at all. I had a hard time staying warm since the blanket was on the small size. If you are not on the small size, you might want to bring along a travel blanket to help. The rocking of the train, and the noise of the rails actually made for a rough night for me. I was surprised, since I usually find the rocking of a ship to be sleep inducing. But between the blanket and the train rumbling, I did not sleep well at all. I was suddenly glad I was only overnight for one night.
