YouTube Video Description

On September 10, 2021 I set sail on Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas for a seven day Alaska cruise visiting Juneau, Skagway and Sitka, plus the Dawes glacier. This is the fourth day of the cruise, we are docked in Skagway. The excursion I went on was the White Pass Scenic Railway (https://www.princess.com/ports-excursions/skagway-alaska-excursions/white-pass-scenic-railway), and it is a 2.75 hour tour. It cost $139.95 per person. I very much enjoyed this excursion. I have taken it before on my first trip to Alaska many years ago, and remembered it being a beautiful way to see some of the interior. You ride in these rail cars that take you to the summit, and then you come back down again. The scenery is really beautiful, and how often do you get to ride on a train these days? The seats are quite clever, when we reach the top, the back rest can be flipped over (they are bench style seats) allowing you to always be facing the direction the train is moving. There is a platform on each end of each car. Moving between cars is not permitted except for the staff. There is a guide narrating the journey and giving you the history of the railroad and the gold rush of the area. When the trip ends, you have the choice of getting off in the center of town (which I did) or riding all the way back to the ship. The walk from town back to the pier is not far, maybe a ten minute walk. I went shopping and had a quick lunch in the Sweet Tooth Cafe. I needed to get out of the wind and the cold long enough to defrost after being out on the train platform filming so much. Dinner was at Chops Grill, and was very good. All in all, a great day in Alaska and on Ovation of the Seas. I look forward to visiting Sitka, our next port, for the first time.
