Creator's Key Takeaways
I'm quite glad we didn't get to do the rock because we'd never have come here. And this is really, really lovely.
It just shows you know you can do a lot in a short amount of time. If you are here and you're thinking oh I haven't got long you can definitely pack a load of stuff in.
I don't know whether I'm going to enjoy this, but you know what? I've really, really enjoyed Gibralta.

Breaking news from Gibraltar: the famous Gibraltar Cable Car (running since 1966) has now closed for a major demolition and rebuild, and it is not expected to reopen until at least the end of 2027. That means getting to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar is now only possible by taxi, minibus tour, e-bike, or on foot. For cruise passengers and day visitors, this is a big change. The cable car used to take just 6 minutes, but walking can take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, and taxi prices and queues may rise as a result. In this video, we show you exactly what to do in Gibraltar if you cannot (or do not want to) go up the Rock. We arrived in Gibraltar on a cruise expecting a full day to explore, but the night before our port stop the captain announced an incoming storm and our time in port was cut in half. We had to be back onboard for lunch, so the Rock of Gibraltar was no longer possible. Instead, we explore the best things to do in Gibraltar town in a short visit, including Casemates Square, Main Street shopping, and one of the biggest surprises of the day: the Almeida Botanic Gardens (free entry). We also show you the changing of the keys ceremony (Gibraltar’s version of a changing of the guard parade), and finish with a hidden gem art exhibition. If you are cruising to Gibraltar in 2025, 2026 or 2027 and wondering whether it’s still worth visiting without the cable car, this video will help you plan your time and make the most of a short port stop. Topics covered in this Gibraltar cruise port guide: Gibraltar Cable Car closure and rebuild (closed until at least end of 2027) How to get to the top of the Rock without the cable car Walking times vs taxi tours and minibuses Gibraltar cruise port to town: walking vs shuttle bus Casemates Square and Main Street in Gibraltar Prices, shops and what Gibraltar feels like compared to the UK Almeida Botanic Gardens (free and well worth visiting) Changing of the Keys parade in Gibraltar What you can realistically do in just 4 hours in Gibraltar If you are planning a Gibraltar cruise stop and want ideas beyond “do the Rock”, this is the perfect alternative itinerary.
