Day14 was Santorini, somewhere we were keen to see and it didn't disappoint. Our excursion took us to Akrotiri, a Minoan city buried by the explosion that tore the heart out of the volcano about 3,500 years ago. Experts have calculated 50 cubic miles of material was thrown into the atmosphere and it led to what, in modern terms, was a world-wide nuclear winter. Records from Egypt and China tell of rulers being executed for failing in their duties to make the crops flourish! The people of Akrotiri had enough time to escape but they had to go at a moments notice because they left their houses and businesses more or less intact, giving us an amazing insight into their lives. Thira, the main city, was bustling, even with only two, smaller (~2000 passengers each) ships there that day. We really enjoyed the museum containing artefacts and wall-paintings from Akrotiri but the heat was becoming uncomfortable. We'd been given a number of warnings about the queues for the cable cars and how people have struggled to get back to the tenders before 'all aboard' time so we joined the queue before the crowds started. It still took more than an hour and there was very little shade. Beware! So we came to the end of our holiday. Our bus didn't leave for the airport until about 16.30 so we had time to wander into Marmaris again, though with the temperature heading for 37C our visit wasn't too long! The only issue we encountered was at Dalaman Airport, where the conveyor system at the check-in booths failed and we had to stand in long queues for a long time without knowing what was wrong. Once that had been fixed all went well and the Meet & Greet Parking at East Midlands Airport made getting home in the early hours much less stressful than the last time we'd arrived in the wee small hours, having to queue in a cold wind while waiting for a bus to take us to the parking zone.
