Using images from the Hillwood Collection, Sea Cloud Cruises and Knego's private collection, this is the ship's full story, from conception to the present day. Once the world's largest private yacht, the SEA CLOUD was built in 1931 for financier E.F. Hutton and his cereal heiress wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post as the HUSSAR V. Renamed SEA CLOUD in 1935, after Post divorced Hutton and married Joe Davis (who became the American ambassador to Russia), the ship hosted European royalty and even took the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on a private cruise. In 1942, SEA CLOUD was leased to the US Navy and US Coast Guard for use as a weather patrol ship and renamed IX-99, becoming famous for being the first fully integrated ship in the navy, under the command of Captain Carlton Skinner. After the war, she was returned to Post, who sold her to Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo, who renamed her ANGELITA after his daughter. Trujillo's son turned the yacht into his bachelor pad during a visit to Los Angeles in 1959, enjoying onboard trysts with Joan Collins, Kim Novak and Zsa Zsa Gabor before his father ordered the ship back to the DR. In 1961, Trujillo was assassinated and the yacht was impounded by the government and renamed PATRIA. In 1965, PATRIA was sold for use as a deluxe cruise yacht and renamed ANTARNA but ended up getting seized at Panama in 1971 and left to rot. In 1978, German investors purchased her, completely refitted her as a cruise ship and renamed her SEA CLOUD. Since then, the now 64-guest ship has offered deluxe cruises under the Sea Cloud Cruises banner. Next year, in 2025, SEA CLOUD will be given a life-extending refit to keep her in service well past her 100th birthday.
