The news will lead everyone to believe we've done all we could, and no one is suffering anymore. The news is wrong. People are suffering now more than ever because this burden gets heavier every day. More people are laid off every day. More people succumb to loneliness and burnout every day. We aren't finished. We haven't started yet. So, what can we do? We can start by being kind to people. My favorite bible lesson is on the golden rule: Do to others as you wish to be treated. Treat others with respect, kindness, empathy, understanding, humility, humanity, forgiveness, and compassion. We can support local businesses, small shops we know are or may be struggling. Eat at restaurants that aren't large chains. Purchase gift cards and gift certificates. Share businesses on social media with people you think may enjoy the shop. It doesn't have to be through Shop49th; it can, but you should support what feels right to you. Find a cause, a business, a family, a shop that means something to you and support it. It's so much bigger than we are allowing ourselves to see. Open your eyes, don't be scared, and get to work. Use social media to your advantage. Find a group or project like Shop49th that supports something that's important to you. If there isn't one, or if you think it could be done better, connect with the leaders of that group or do it on your own! Get engaged with people. Connect with people. Show you care. It makes a difference. It matters. It doesn't have to be throwing money at a problem to make it go away. That doesn't always work. Get in touch with your state representatives and encourage them to protect the small businesses in your state. Show kindness to people you see every day. Thank the essential workers you meet. Be gracious, grateful, kind.
