Eventually, the name was Americanized to Key West. The U.S. government bought Key West from Spain in the early 1800s. Today it remains a haven for the world-weary with its array of 19th century architecture, balmy weather, and easily-traversed streets lined with restaurants, shops, galleries, theatres, museums, nightclubs and historical sites. The island is one of nearly a thousand coral islets in an archipelago stretching southward from Miami.
