Hello Travelers, In August of 2023, I did my first full transit of the Panama Canal with Princess cruises. It was a 19 day cruise, the longest I had been on to date. OOPS! Had some technical difficulties with the video as originally posted, so here is a newly fixed version instead. This is day 12 of the cruise, and the day when we get to go on our shore excursions around the Panama Canal. While there were a ton of interesting tours offered, I saw the Panama Canal & Locks Transit by Boat excursion and immediately booked it. I wanted to get the perspective of both going through the locks in a cruise ship and in a smaller boat. It turned out this was basically a ferry and we were able to get a great vantage point that was very different from the experience on the cruise ship. I was in the front of the boat, which was great, because my cabin on the ship is aft. We were much lower to the ground level in this crossing, and I was up pretty high for the ship’s crossing. Finally, we went through a totally different set of locks between the two, with this excursion using the San Miguel locks and tomorrow’s using the Miraflores locks. I also did Chef’s Table, my first time on Princess. You don’t see it offered in the normal dining booking options, and have to go down to Guest Services on day 1 and tell them you are interested. They make a list and if they get enough participation, they hold Chef’s Table. They left me a voicemail telling me the date and time, and the cost, which was around $100 without the wine pairings. It was held at a large table in the main dining room rather than in its own room, which was not conducive to conversation. But the food was excellent, and those I could talk to and hear were very pleasant. Tomorrow the ship goes through the locks, and late at night, I could see the ships already lining up for their slot to traverse the canal. I have more videos for this cruise, as well as future cruises booked through the rest of this year and beyond. Thanks for watching!
