Hello Travelers, In August of 2023, I did my first full transit of the Panama Canal with Princess cruises. It was a 19 day cruise, the longest I had been on to date. This is day 14 of the cruise, and we are docked in Cartagena, Columbia. I booked a shore excursion to make jewelry which was really fun. We were met by the bus right there at the ship, and were treated to a bit of a city tour on our way to the jewelry institute/emerald museum. Cartagena is such a cute town, I would love to spend more time there. Once at the institute, we did our jewelry class. There was a main instructor who was going over the slides, and then at each table was one of the school’s students guiding us through the step by step process of making the jewelry pieces. At the end of the class, you had a choice of which piece to keep included in the prices of the class, and then each additional piece you wanted to keep was $30. We made a ring, bracelet, earrings and a necklace. I kept the ring and the bracelet. The stones were emerald, but rough, which is how they come out of the ground (albeit with less dirt). These are not faceted stones, and they have not been polished. But they have a nice color and are a fun souvenir. After we returned to the port, there was a free zoo you could walk through to get to the ship from the parking lot. It was very nice, with the initial area having parrots, toucans and other birds just hanging out, and there was also a small monkey, also just hanging out in that initial area. Once through that, there were larger areas with peacocks and peahens wandering around, and more parrots and other birds. It was more birds than any other creature, but I like birds, so I was charmed. Dinner was again with the solo meetup group in the MDR. After that, I went to see the singer that my friends enjoyed several times in one of the lounges.
