YouTube Video Description

On September 10, 2021 I set sail on Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas for a seven day Alaska cruise visiting Juneau, Skagway and Sitka, plus the Dawes glacier. This is the fifth day of the cruise, we are docked in Sitka, our last port of call. The excursion I went on was the Best of Sitka tour. I really enjoyed this excursion, and it was a nice sort of introduction to Sitka for someone who has not been there. The tour took us to three places: The Raptor Center, The Fortress of the Bears and The Sitka National Historical Park. The Raptor Center rehabilitates birds of prey injured largely by human interaction. They provide indoor and outdoor areas for the birds to heal and relearn to fly. While bald eagles are their primary residents, there were other birds of prey present when we visited, including hawks and an owl. We got to “meet” one of their “spokes eagles” named Sitka, who had been injured sufficiently that she could not be released again. The Fortress of the Bears had two enclosures, one for the native Black Bears and one for the Brown Bears. It was as close as I have come to these predators, and they are beautiful. Finally, we went to the Sitka National Historical Park, where they have a lovely collection of totem poles, both inside and outside. They have informational exhibits inside the visitors center, and system of paths and creeks on the property. The salmon were reportedly running at the creek, but given the short time at the property, I chose to spend my time looking at the totems and related exhibits. Finally we were given the choice of either stopping in the town center and taking a shuttle back to the ship, or just staying on the bus and riding back to the ship. I stayed, given the amount of camera gear I was carrying. Perhaps next time I visit this port, I can do some shopping as well.
