Hello Travelers, This video is going to be a bit different from my usual content. I had a problem with a fellow passenger on a trip I took this summer, and it illustrated some security issues that were present on that ship, and some that are fleet wide. The three main problems I identified were: The medallion scanners weren’t working well or the medallions weren’t functioning properly (several people’s, not just mine, it was very common) and so the staff would ask for your cabin number when you needed to use anything around the medallion functionality. This means you had to say it out loud multiple times a day, regardless of where you were or who could hear you. The door displays showed your full name by default whenever someone with a medallion approached the door. You can go to guest services and have them change this, but it is the default behavior. The medallion app allows anyone to search by first name on Shipmate Chat and get the full name with pictures of any passenger with that first name. So anyone who meets you (or overhears your name) can get your full name from the app and there did not seem to be a way to opt out of that search. When you accept a connection request inside the app in Shipmates Chat, the default is to share your location data with that person unless you notice and uncheck that option. This allows them to pull up the deck plans and see where you are on the ship at any given time. All of these are security risks to solo travelers, particularly women. Hotels (and let’s face it, ships are floating hotels) already have protocols to keep from sharing the hotel room numbers of their guests. They typically will write the room number, point to it and tell you it is your room, but not say it out loud. This is because there have been many instances where someone overheard the room number and then went and caused trouble for the guest. This should be the standard for cruise ships as well. I go on to outline the issues I had with this particular guest, as well as the ones others had with him. The result was he made me feel unsafe on the ship, and really spoiled the cruise experience for me. Princess security was notified—a group of us made a report—but nothing seemed to have been done. As a solo traveler, I will be paying particular attention to this kind of problem on my next Princess cruises to see if they are doing anything to address their security problems.
