Sky Princess Embarkation Day!!! | Solo Travel

Hello Travelers, I boarded the Sky Princess on July 20, 2024 for a trip around Scandinavia. We left out of the Port of Southampton in the UK. This is a cruise that has been in the making for a long time. It will be the last cruise we can take with my Dad, and he actually made it on board this time! Since we were traveling with such a large group, and we all flew in a day or more early, it made sense for us all to go from our hotel to the airport and take the Princess airport transfer that we booked to get to the ship. It made sure we all stayed together and nobody got left behind (well, almost, but more on that later). If you traveled during July of 2024, you may have gotten caught up in the Crowdstrike meltdown that affected not only the travel industry (particularly airlines) worldwide, but also hospitals, banks and many other businesses. Almost all of us were already in town when the outage hit, and we were the lucky ones, let me tell you. While our hotel could take credit card payments at the front desk, the hotel’s system in the restaurant could not take room charges. So we had to pay with a card there as well. It was certainly a minor inconvenience compared to some people’s stories. We did have on couple in our party who had been staying in Berlin and had booked a flight from there to London to catch the same airport transfer we all took. However their flight (like so many thousands of others) was cancelled. The airline automatically rebooked them without consulting them for a flight several days later. Of course, the ship would be long gone by then. So they arranged to catch up to the ship when we docked in Warnemunde, Germany, which was a several hour drive away from their location, but at least driving was an option. They did miss three days of the cruise as a result, sadly. I’m sure we had a number of passengers having to meet the ship at different ports because of the situation, so the crew got some practice with that more than usual.
